Blast from the Past

In the sidebar ‘Blast from the Past’ you'll see a post from July 2012 which discusses the relative merits of new construction versus upgrades.  The post also calls for a moratorium on new construction!  What?!  Stop new construction?  Wouldn't that be a disaster?  Find out.

Enjoy!

    1. The archives and various lists are on the far right side of the page. I've heard that some mobile devices and operating systems don't display the full width of the page which is optimized for the PC. Either scroll to the right or resize your display or do whatever you do to see to the right.

  2. Read on the war zone that the Navy has decided to upgrade and keep all flt 1 Burke's till the 2030s. Simply amazing.

    1. If these means they're upping their maintenance game to do this great. They're old, but I think I'd rather have an old Burke than a new LCS all things equal.

    2. Not to dampen any enthusiasm but this would be around the Navy's tenth version of Burke plans. They alternate between upgrading and cancelling upgrades, early retiring and not retiring. Honestly, the Navy's plans aren't much more than random numbers and wishful thinking. Consider the example of the Ticonderogas and all the modernization/cancellation gymnastics they went through before being retired in place and, literally, left to rot.

So, maybe the Burkes will be upgraded and maybe they won't. I suspect when it comes down to paying for upgrades versus paying for some kind of new construction, the Navy will do what they always do and retire the ships. But, we'll see.
