Marines: The Few, the Woke, the Diversified

Marine Corps Commandant General Berger seems determined not just to redefine the Marine’s role but to totally destroy the culture and strength of the Corps.  His latest emphasis is on diversification.

The goal that's driving what amounts to a cultural shift within the service, is for the Marines "to reflect America, to reflect the society we come from," Gen. David Berger, commandant of the Marine Corps, said in an interview with NPR's Morning Edition. (1)

It’s pure insanity to set a goal for the Marines to reflect society at large.  Society at large is not idealized for war.  Large segments of society are poorly suited to the realities, brutalities, and rigors of war (I’m looking at you, women).  Many other factions of society want nothing to do with war.  By inclination, choice, and nature many people have no interest in the military so why would we want to reflect them in the Marine’s composition?

The core of America's strength lies in its diversity, Berger said, adding that the same is true for the military. (1)

No, General, the military’s strength lies in its firepower and finding the few, the very few, from among society who have the temperament to use that firepower in the most brutal and horrifying way possible.  What sane person would expect society at large to meet that requirement?  What sane person would want the military to reflect a society at large that wants nothing to do with the military or war?

I don’t know what his motives are but Berger is destroying the Marines.  Pure and simple.

  1. God deliver us from the Baby Boomer Generals. Everything they touch gets destroyed. It will take years to undo the damage they have wrought.

  2. "The core of America's strength lies in its diversity"

And that's the way of thinking that makes you lose to primitive heathens, to say nothing about the Chinese.
But it makes for a great soundbite on CNN.

  3. We are, fundamentally, an unserious people at this point in our history.

The problem is less with the population at large and moreso with our elites and leaders.

If this foolishness continues, we are doomed.

  4. American politicians- which sadly include military officers, nowadays- have no tolerance for diversity OF THOUGHT, which would've let them and their subordinates "think outside the box" for solutions to problems they face. They focus too much on superficial "diversity," i.e., skin color, sex and sexual orientation- none of which meaningfully contribute to a person's ability to do a job.

    1. Nail hit on the head. Being of a different racial/gender/sexual/religious/dietary persuasion doesn't mean you offer anything new.

I work with a lot of doctors (psychiatrists) from diverse backgrounds - Australian, Indian, Sri Lankan, ex-Yugoslav, Italian, Swedish, British. Men and women, Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Jews etc.

They all act the same (entitled, whingy gits on $400,000 per annum who don't like to work too hard and who refuse to understand the environment in which they work in).

And to ensure their attitudes continue in future generations, they all send their kids to the same expensive elite Christian schools (even the Muslims, Hindus and Jews)!

  5. Well, we've heard a series of examples of wokeism infecting the other services, so I guess it was only a matter of time before it got the Marines too. Sigh ....

  6. Quoting Berger from the footnoted article:

"We are a purely combat force," he says, a distinction that separates the service from others. "We were built under a different set of circumstances — but that is changing."

How, and more importantly why, is that changing?

  7. I wonder how much of this is "go with the flow", in order to stay off of, or under, the radar of the wokeists??? Or does a growing percentage of senior leadership actually believe this garbage??
Not that there's an excuse for spouting the nonsense and being part of the sound bite generating apparatus... Where are the leaders who will stand up and say, "My only mission is to create and maintain the most lethal fighting machine on the planet, and I'll avoid anything that detracts from that"???
    Ill wait...

  8. If Only.....

Washington (AP)- Adm. Gilday issued a directive, and held a press conference discussing the Navy-wide implications today at the Pentagon. "Yesterday, I issued a directive that will strengthen our Navy. Effective immediately, I have eliminated ALL quotas, whether race or gender based, real or implied, having to do with recruiting, promotion, and retention. The United States, and its military, has always sought the best and brightest. Its defense deserves and requires nothing less. In spite of recent social trends, I believe that exceptionalism and merit-based practices, which are historically successful, are the only way to create and continue to be a dominant force. Social experimentation, and identity-based structure has no place in our Navy."
The CNO went on to explain that he instituted a program to verify that all recruiting and promotion decisions would in fact be color/gender blind, to every extent possible under Federal law. Also, all Navy-wide programs, conferences, seminars, etc having to do with diversity and inclusion would be cancelled immediately. Curriculum at the Naval Academy was also mentioned as being eliminated or changed.
The other service chiefs were unavailable for comment, but rumors of Commandant Bergers sudden impending retirement surfaced shortly after the announcement...

  10. "I don’t know what his motives are.."
I'm sure you actually do ComNavOps, you're just too much of a gentleman to say it. Berger is a politician not a leader. There's a difference.
Its why he wants to turn the Marines into a "little navy" with ASW, and Missle Marines, and LCS wannnabe ships. He is following the path of political admirals who need to ingratiate themselves with whomever the current Gods of Washington are blessing while getting in good with the same contractors that offer admirals cushy "think tank" jobs or possibly even an actual political appointment.
I apologize if this comment came off badly. I have been listening to the Fat Leonard podcast and the more I see they way current leadership in the Navy Department acts, the more I believe those charges of corruption and CYA.
Ironically, I had tuned in to it expecting it to be another false set of charges against the military like so many others and was trying to think of defenses.
