CNO's Position Report 2012

I am great.  You are great.  The Navy is great.

At the risk of sounding like an episode of Star Trek, I've just summarized the Position Report for 2012 that has been released by CNO.  Those of you who enjoy a good sales brochure that says nothing specific ought to check it out.  Those who like actual and useful information ...  Move along.  Nothing to be seen here.  Return to your homes.

I report the existence of this document just for the sake of completeness.

  1. Not to be contrarian -- but I think this document does cite a few very specific and accomplishments.

For instance: introduction of the P-8A and fielding two new VA SSN, and improvement of forward infrastruction in Bahran and Rota.

It's an end of the year report. What exactly were you expecting to see?

    1. If that's your idea of specific and useful information then I'm glad to have been of help to you by posting the link!

What was I expecting? Nothing, and I wasn't disappointed.

To return to slightly serious, CNO has laid out programs and, to a limited extent, recognized problems facing the Navy (manning shortfalls, maintenance issues, and so forth). The year end Progress Report was supposed to be his report on how those issues have been dealth with, what remains to be done, and how the various issues will be dealth with in the future. Kind of a State of the Navy address. This report tells me nothing about any of the Navy's issues.

  2. Acording to the Navigation Plan, the Position Reports are supposed to explain "...how well I [CNO) think we are staying on course." I'm not sure if it's really supposed to be an all-encompassing State of the Navy.

To your more specific issues, it does refer to initiatives being taken to addess manning and maintenance shortfalls.

I'm not trying to defend ADM Greenert - but in my opinion he's doing a heck of a better job than previous CNOs at strategic communications.
