I am a big fan of Google Earth,Bing Maps and I post mainly about military sites on: http://virtualglobetrotting.com/maps/.
It is super fun to do and I can only dream of what kind of military capabilities NRO has but I generally agree that using satellites to keep track off ships at sea is no small task. Google Earth is civilian and I don't know all the details of how they "treat" the pictures, it's not like we get a rare picture from space, they have to do a bunch of stuff to it before it is "useful" so I don't know what happens to all the ships at sea but it sure isn't easy to spot them when you have the huge expanse of the Pacific....

This is another site that is pretty cool, keeps track of civilian ships:
http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/

Last but not least, we can't be sure that in the next war we will have free access to space and our satellites won't be targeted. It doesn't have to be kinetic, well placed virus might be enough.NICOhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14567491909555759918noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5579907756656776056.post-41278970873344233192013-12-07T06:42:45.423-08:002013-12-07T06:42:45.423-08:00I agree and note that space has been militarized: ...I agree and note that space has been militarized: anyone who thinks that the satellites will automatically be available during a contingency, let alone a war, is sadly mistaken.

C4-ISR will be subject to withering attack from cyber and physical assault from command centers, to uplink sites, to the physical satellites themselves.

Every country with at least a IRBM capability has at least a nascent anti-satellite capability.

Food for thought...

GABAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
