Look up the Albany class guided missile cruisers as an extreme example. The problem is that aluminum doesn’t handle heat nearly as well as steel, which became glaringly obvious for the USN when the USS Belknap’s entire superstructure melted after a collision with a carrier in 1975. The Burke, designed after the Belknap incident, reflected the change to an all-steel superstructure. Then there was the British experience in the Falklands. So then why would the Navy go to an ALL aluminum ship with the LCS?

Then there is the module design, which is now not going to be utilized. Ships with MCM will stay that way, the same for ASuW. So the “plug and play” versatility we all heard about with LCS, and part of the rationale for the entire design, isn’t going to happen. And both modules are way behind schedule.WireguidedMarinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16444356806279366997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5579907756656776056.post-14568565281445490402013-01-23T17:34:22.886-08:002013-01-23T17:34:22.886-08:00Good god this has got to be the surface equivalent...Good god this has got to be the surface equivalent of a A-12.

OK maybe not that bad but.Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08074400411280663565noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5579907756656776056.post-59289734003432214412013-01-23T10:31:09.143-08:002013-01-23T10:31:09.143-08:00LCS press conference on surface conference
